From Cramped Federation Cottage to Modern Family Home
This Federation-era home in Brighton had wonderful bones and a prime location — but its original footprint no longer served a growing family. Tight rear rooms, a closed-off kitchen, and a disjointed connection to the backyard were all limiting daily life. The owners came to Bayside Extensions with a clear brief: open it up, bring in more light, and create a master suite worthy of the suburb.
Our design team worked closely with the family over three months to develop a solution that respected the heritage character at the front while delivering an unapologetically contemporary rear extension. The result: an open-plan kitchen-dining-living zone with three-metre ceilings, a first-floor master suite with a north-facing balcony, and a seamless indoor–outdoor connection through full-width stackable doors.
The extension was completed on schedule in 16 weeks, receiving a 5-star review from the client and featuring as a finalist in the 2024 HIA Brighton Renovation category.
